A safari unlike any other

The Kafue River carves through one of Africa's largest and least-visited national parks — a vast, pristine ecosystem that most travellers will never see. RowSafari takes you into its heart the way the river intended: slowly, silently, and completely immersed.

Travelling by oar-powered craft, you'll navigate gentle currents through floodplains teeming with hippo, elephant, and an extraordinary diversity of birdlife. Each night, you'll make camp on the riverbank under some of the darkest skies on the continent.

Three elements. One journey.

Every RowSafari expedition is built on three pillars that make this experience unlike anything else on the continent.

01
🚣

The Row

No motors, no noise — just the rhythm of oars on water. You'll cover the river at nature's pace, accessing channels and backwaters impossible to reach by motorboat. Prior rowing experience welcome but not required.

02
🌍

The Wild

The Kafue is home to over 150 mammal species and 500 bird species. Approaching silently by water means closer, more authentic encounters — hippo pods, elephants drinking at dusk, fish eagles hunting overhead.

03
🏕️

The Camp

Each evening, camp is set on a carefully selected riverbank. Expect premium bedrolls, excellent bush cooking over open fire, and the soundtrack of the African night — without a permanent structure in sight.

Five days on the Kafue

4N / 5D Expedition Duration
Day 1
Arrival

Launch & First Paddle

Arrive at the put-in point north of the Kafue National Park. Safety briefing, boat allocation, and your first afternoon paddle downstream through open floodplain. Camp established on a sandy bank with sundowner drinks as the light fades.

Day 2
Exploration

Deep Into the Floodplain

A full day on the water, navigating braided channels through the Busanga floodplain. Morning birdwatching at dawn, then steady rowing with stops to observe wildlife from the water. Evening game walk from camp.

Day 3
Immersion

The Heart of the Kafue

Navigate deeper into the park's core. This is prime hippo and crocodile territory — your guide will steer you through safely while maximising wildlife encounters. Afternoon fishing for bream and tigerfish.

Day 4
Adventure

Rapids & Open Water

The river picks up pace with gentle rapids — an exhilarating change of rhythm. Lunch on an island. Afternoon paddle through gallery forest, with some of the trip's best birding opportunities. Final riverside camp with a celebratory dinner.

Day 5
Departure

Final Paddle & Farewell

A gentle morning paddle to the take-out point. Brunch on the river before disembarking. Transfer to the airstrip or onward accommodation. Optional extension to a Kafue lodge available.
